Satirical cartoon, Evacuation of Holland and Brabant. Showing General Charles-Francois Dumouriez retreating with the French army (in blue), while the Austrian army (in green) led by the Count of Clerfayt pursue. Dumouriez was seeking to enforce the decree of the French Convention that offered assistance to all peoples who wish to recover their liberty'. On 1 February 1793 revolutionary France had declared war on England and Holland. Dumouriez threatened to invade Dutch Flanders and Zeeland but was defeated at Neerwinden on 18 March and forced to withdraw to Belgium. Dumouriez is shown here vomiting and urinating as he flees. An allegorical female figure, the spirit of liberty, lies dead on the ground. Date: 1793
