Chinese Communist leader, Mao Zedong (1893-1976), also known as Chairman Mao. Seen here meeting and greeting Ernesto "Che" Guevara (1928-1967), the Argentinian Marxist revolutionary, physician, writer, guerrilla leader, diplomat, military theorist, and major figure in the Cuban Revolution, who had taken a pro-Chinese stance on a split between China and Soviet Russia

Revolution of Theriso - The revolutionaries & Venizelos

In 1898, the Great Powers declared Crete as an independent Cretan State, under the rule of the Sultan. Yet, the administration of commander Prince George irritated the Cretans, who in March 1905 revolted - the famous Revolution of Theriso (the participants of which are depicted here), thus forcing Prince George to resign and appoint commandeer, Alexandros Zaimis. The leader of this revolt was Eleftherios Venizelos (1864 - 1936) - pictured in the centre of this group

John Maclean, Scottish teacher and revolutionary socialist

John Maclean (1879-1923), Scottish schoolteacher and revolutionary Marxist socialist. He was imprisoned for his opposition to the First World War, and lost his teaching post, after which he became a full-time Marxist lecturer and organiser, and later founded the Scottish Labour College. In prison again in 1918 after a conviction for sedition, he went on hunger strike and was force fed, which contributed to his early death
