Suffrage N. U. W. S.s Croydon Branch 1909
Suffrage N.U.W.S.S Croydon Branch 1909. In November 1909, the Croydon Branch of the National Union of Womens Suffrage Societies organised a Suffrage Week. On Tuesday 9th November, members marched to Pembroke Hall carrying banners and emblems designed and made by the Artists Suffrage League. These had been shown at the Congress of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, held in London, April to May 1909. The photograph shows a hall set out for afternoon tea as on Wednesday this was served while a fundraising red and white sale was held. Hanging on the walls are many banners which can just be identified - includes George Eliot designed by Mary Lowndes Edith Pechey Phipson (Mary Lowndes) a serpent and cockerel which represented Doctors and Surgeons and the lower half of A Montgomerie Beddo (designer unknown) Date: 1909
