Suffragette Board Game PANK-A-SQUITH

A suffragette board game called Pank-A-Squith which was first advertised in the pages of Votes for Women, October 1909. It was described as a highly artistic TABLE GAME that helps to spread the movement. A suffragette tries to get from her home to the Houses of Parliament facing a series of challenges and various incidents. There are 50 squares, each having a detailed and colourful vignette, showing 10 Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park Demonstrations, Bow St. Court, Queen's Hall, Clements Inn, Mrs. Pankhurst, Inspector Jarvis, Prime Minister Asquith, Tax Resistance, The Suffragette Dreadnought, Hunger Strikers, Holloway Prison and the forging of suffragette brand handcuffs. There are six metal suffragette figures with sashes and scrolls. The base of the board is of purple, white and green stripes. Date: 1909

Suffragette Womens March 1912

In October 1912, six women left Edinburgh to walk 400 miles to London, gathering signatures en route in support of Women's Suffrage. The march was organised by Mrs. De Fonblanque (sister of Maud Arncliffe-Sennettt). The marchers wore a coat and skirt in russett brown with a matching hat, and earned for the marchers the name of the Brown Women'. The route lay along the Great North Road and the women covered a distance of about 15 miles a day. They carried a banner designed by Louise R Jacobs for the Suffrage Atelier. The march ended in London on November 16th 1912. Photo shows a stop made, possibly in Doncaster. Date: 1912

Suffragettes Pankhurst and Gawthorpe Rutland 1907

Christabel Pankhurst and Mary Gawthorpe in the Market Place, Uppingham, holding a meeting during the 1907 Rutland bye-election. The campaign saw Mary Gawthorpe the victim of dirty tricks by supporters of the Liberal candidate, W.F Lyons. Sylvia Pankhurst later gave an account of an incident when Mary was struck on the head by a pot-egg (a china dummy egg) and knocked unconscious. Youths were apparently paid by a wealthy Liberal supporter to hurl sweets at suffragette speakers (see Votes for Women 6th August 1909) Polling was held on11th Juneand the Conservative was duly elected. Date: 1907
