General view of the Presidio Modelo Prison on the Isla de Pinos (Isle of Pines), Cuba, now renamed Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth). The prison was designed using the panopticon principle promoted by Jeremy Bentham. It was built between 1926 and 1931, and held 6000 prisoners. Cells are arranged around each blocks circular perimeter, with an observation point placed at the centre. The site is now a museum
