Framed Print of St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231). Franciscan friar
St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231) wishing to demonstrate to a heretic who asked him for a miracle, the truth of the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. Anthony of Padua stood off to one side with the consecrated host in his hands, while the heretic stood to the other holding some fodder for the mule to eat. The mule, hangry, went before the Eucharist and knelt down to adore the Blessed Sacrament. Engraving after a miniature in Les Grandes Heures d'Anne de Bretagne, late 15th century. Vie Militaire et Religieuse au Moyen Age et a l'Epoque de la Renaissance. Paris, 1877. Mary Evans Picture Library makes available wonderful images created for people to enjoy over the centuries. © Thaliastock / Mary Evans
