Framed Print of Northwestern Spain Vigo Bay was the site of 1702 attack by allied English and Dutch navies on a French fleet protecting Spaniards

Northwestern Spain Vigo Bay was the site of 1702 attack by allied English and Dutch navies on a French fleet protecting Spaniards. A massive treasure was believed to lie in the bay inspiring over 70 expeditions. The expedition in the mid 1950s was the largest and involved a volunteer team of divers and a rejigged fishing vessel. John Potter, expedition organizer, wrote several books. John sadovy photographed the expedition in 1955 on assignment for LIFE magazine (not published) and some images are in Potter's 1958 book The Treasure Divers of Vigo Bay'. Image shows rejigged fishing vessel and divers working in stormy conditions. Date: 1955. Mary Evans Picture Library makes available wonderful images created for people to enjoy over the centuries. © The John Sadovy Collection / Mary Evans Picture Library
