Dolly Varden was a character from Charles Dickens Barnaby Rudge and was a popular song subject during the 1870s. In this illustration by popular artist Alfred Concanen, Dolly is shown in a striking floral bustle-style coat over a green quilted skirt, wearing a plaited chignon hairstyle under her stylish hat.
