Lansdowne House, Berkeley Square

Lansdowne House, Berkeley Square in the heart of Mayfair, London. It was built by Robert Adam for the Earl of Bute who sold it before it was completed to the second Earl of Sherburne in 1768. It was the London home of the Marquis of Lansdowne, and was occupied by Gordon Selfridge in the 1920s. Joseph Priestley, was librarian there in 1774, during which time he discovered the existence of oxygen. Other famous occupants included William Pitt the Younger, Lord Rosebery and William Waldorf Astor. Lansdowne Passage, a narrow byway at the back of the house, was in the 18th century a favourite route of flight for highwaymen escaping deeds of violence in Mayfair. Since 1935, the remains of the building has been the home of the Lansdowne Club. Date: 18th century
