Sleeping in the Shelters, 1940

The Bystander depicts a range of different sleeping arrangements during night-time stays in air-raid shelters. On the top-left (Lansdowne House shelter) women can be seen resting on li-los, rugs, cushions, and camp beds. Those on the top-right (a Mayfair hotel shelter) are enjoying the luxury of real mattresses. On the centre-right (the shelter at Murray's dance club), a woman sleeps sprawled across three chairs. On the bottom right (Grosvenor House), deck-chairs and chairs are used. While on the bottom left (the crypt at St. Paul's), the poor individuals sleeping on nothing but rugs are treated to cups of tea.

Ladies of the Council of Queen Marys Needlework Guild

Members of the Council of Queen Mary's Needlework Guild. On 10th August 1914 Queen Mary issued an appeal to the women of the Empire to organise a large collection of garments for those who will suffer on account of World War One. The garments were of service to soldiers, sailors, and Territorials, to their families, to the military and naval hospitals and to those among the poorer classes of the population. The more useful garments for soldiers and sailors on active service included flannel shirts, socks, sweaters and cardigan jackets, and for the naval and military hospitals, night-shirts, pyjamas, flannel bed-jackets and bed-socks. Date: 1914

Lansdowne House, Berkeley Square

Lansdowne House, Berkeley Square in the heart of Mayfair, London. It was built by Robert Adam for the Earl of Bute who sold it before it was completed to the second Earl of Sherburne in 1768. It was the London home of the Marquis of Lansdowne, and was occupied by Gordon Selfridge in the 1920s. Joseph Priestley, was librarian there in 1774, during which time he discovered the existence of oxygen. Other famous occupants included William Pitt the Younger, Lord Rosebery and William Waldorf Astor. Lansdowne Passage, a narrow byway at the back of the house, was in the 18th century a favourite route of flight for highwaymen escaping deeds of violence in Mayfair. Since 1935, the remains of the building has been the home of the Lansdowne Club. Date: 18th century
