Training Ship Formidable, Portishead, Bristol
The Training Ship Formidable, moored in the Bristol Channel at Portishead, was established in 1869 as an Industrial Training establishment. Boys aged 11-14 were trained in seamanship, with many going on to join the naval services. In 1906, the ship was replaced by the land-based Formidable Nautical School
