Veldhoven Liberation Memorial and HCR Memorial
The Operation Market Garden plan required that the Guards Armoured Division, which was leading the ground advance north, should advance at maximum speed in order to cross the river bridges as soon as the airborne forces had captured them. On 18 September, delayed below Eindhoven on the main road (The Corridor ), the Divisions armoured cars of 2nd Household Cavalry Regiment under Lieutenant Palmer, set off to find a way around to the west, which they did, meeting the American 506th PIR at Woensel north of the city. En route they crossed the River Dommel using the Notre Dame bridge at Veldhoven around 1300 hours. The Memorial was the idea of Jacques Bijnen of the Veldhoven Historical Heritage Foundation and commemorates 65 years of liberation. It was unveiled on 18 September 2009. The image is that of a Humber Scout Car. Full liberation of Veldhoven came mid-morning the following day when soldiers of the 53rd (Welsh) Division arrived. Date: 2006
