Italian Infantry advance

An illustration by Edouardo Matania showing the method of approach to enemy positions adopted by Italian Infantry when under heavy shrapnel fire. The soldiers carry heavy sandbags on their backs through which flying bullets cannot penetrate. Thus protected they may advance on all fours to within a short distance of the enemy line. Behind the advancing troops, they are covered by machine gun fire. Date: 1915
