Palestine - The Great Lavra of St. Sabas

The Great Lavra of St. Sabas, known in Arabic as Mar Saba - a Greek Orthodox monastery overlooking the Kidron Valley in the West Bank (east of Bethlehem). It was founded by Saint Sabas of Cappadocia in 439 and today houses around 20 monks. It is considered to be one of the oldest inhabited monasteries in the world, and still maintains many of its ancient traditions. Date: circa 1910s

Israel - Ramla

Scenes from Ramla, Israel (at this time part of the Ottoman Empire) - featuring Reinhart's Hotel, a panoramic view of the town and the The Tower of Ramla. Also known as the White Tower, this interesting survival was built in the 13th century. It served as the minaret of the White Mosque (al-Masjid al-Abyad) erected by Caliph Suleiman in the 8th century. The Tower also has the title - The Tower of forty Martyrs, named in memory of forty companions of the Prophet Muhammad. Date: 1898
