Alexandra Palace, the home of the B.B.C. The large transmitt

Alexandra Palace as the home of the B.B.C television service in 1936 showing the mast and transmitting aerials for vision and sound. Special tests of reception of the B.B.C from Alexandra Palace of synchronised television and speech were held at Olympia by a committee of the Radio Manufacturers' Association. On alternate days transmissions from Alexandra Palace were given by Baird and Marconi E.M.I systems. In 1935 the B.B.C experimented with John Logie Baird's television system and Marconi's E.M.I system. The E.M.I succeeded Baird's in 1937

Alarm Buoy, 1858

Engraving showing an alarm, or marker, buoy designed by Brown, Lenox and Company of Millwall, 1858. This buoy featured a water-wheel in its centre which, through the motion of the water, rang the bell at the top of the buoy. Mr. Lenox believed that his design was an improvement over previous designs as the bell would still ring during the flat calms often associated with foggy days

The new coffee tavern at Bradford

Interior and exterior views of the new coffee tavern in Bradford, inaugurated by W. E Forster, M.P in 1879. The Coffee Tavern movement was a Victorian effort to get people out of pubs. Proposed by the Bradford councillor, alderman and magistrate, Frederick Priestman, the tavern was opened at the junction of Westgate, Ivegate and Kirkgate and was an immediate commercial success serving food as well as coffee. Within a few years there were 28 branches in the Bradford district but with over 400 licensed beer sellers in the area, how much of a sobering effect they had on the local population is debatable
