Interior of the Royal Southampton Railway state carriage

Carriage constructed by the South Western Railway Company for the conveyance of Queen Victoria and her family to their residence in the Isle of Wight. The carriage ran on Beattie's patent wooden wheels with the interior split into two areas; one for the queen and one for the royal children

Interior view of the new great circular engine-house at the Camden Town depot of the North Western Railway. The vast circular building accommodates engines and tenders used in the luggage department of the line. In the centre is a large turn-table 36 feet that is used manoeuvre the engines to different tracks

The underground was deemed to be the solution for convenient travel in densely populated areas. In its early stages, the Underground railway intended to run light trains at short intervals, in the hope that this would prevent collisions
