Caricature of Annette Kellerman - Swimmer and Actress

Annette Marie Sarah Kellerman (18861975) - Australian swimmer, film star, and writer. One of the first women to wear a one-piece bathing costume, causing a minor scandal at the time and opening debate (satirised here) about athletics making a girl more masculine and less feminine - a question posed by Dr Dudley A Sargent (of Harvard) in The Ladies Home Journal of March 1912. Date: circa 1909

The Catch of the Season by Seymour Hicks and Cosmo Hamilton

The Catch of the Season by Seymour Hicks and Cosmo Hamilton, with music by Herbert Haines and Evelyn Baker. The flyer is headed Mr George Dance's Co, by arrangement with Charles Frohman'. Seymour Hicks wrote the part of the Duke of St. Jermyns for himself. He is recognisable as the man on the left standing sheepishly with his back to a long row of women dressed for dancing, all are looking hopefully his way. He holds his hat in his hands and is looking nervously over his shoulder. The caption below says Duke, We Are All Unmarried'.

Vaudeville Theatre, London

Promotional postcard for The Vaudeville Theatre is a West End theatre on the Strand in the City of Westminster. As the name suggests, the theatre held mostly vaudeville shows and musical revues in its early days. It opened in 1870 and was rebuilt twice, although each new building retained elements of the previous structure. The current building opened in 1926, and the capacity is now 690 seats. Rare thunder drum and lightning sheets, together with other early stage mechanisms survive in the theatre. Date: circa 1900
