Letter from Hardacre J. Pitt. An important touring manager in the decades around 1900, he used his notepaper to advertise his repertoire. This letter from the Comedy Theatre, Manchester, is dated 10th December 1891. Of the plays illustrated, East Lynne and The Shaughraun date from the 1860s. Current Cash by C. A. Clarke was from 1886, and Old London by Arthur Shirley had been first produced as recently as 25th July 1891. Date: 1891

The Metropolitan Police Association Football Team prior to boarding a KLM four engine Fokker plane to Amsterdam. The visit was arranged following an invitation from the Dutch Police Association to take part in their Jubilee celebrations. The main prupose of the trip was to play two football matches against the Dutch police at Amstersdam and Doetichem.

The Besses o' th' Barn Brass Band - Paddington Station

The Besses o' th' Barn Brass Band from Besses o' th' Barn, an old industrial town situated between Manchester and Bury, in Lancashire. In 1905 the band toured France to promote the Entente Cordiale. Pictured here on 23rd June 1905 at Paddington Station, London on their way to play before the King at Windsor en route to France. The band made two "world tours" in the early 1900s, one between 1906 and 1908/9 and the other also lasting for more than a year. With Alexander Owen as its conductor, the band visited Australia, Canada, Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. Date: 1905
