1937 Coronation - spectators climbing on Victoria memorial

In order to gain a better vantage point from which to see King George VI and Queen Elizabeth appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following their Coronation on 12 May 1937, some of the more daring members of the crowd climbed the Victoria Memorial and refused to come down. Eventually, a good-natured policeman scaled the statue himself and skilfully removed the tenants! Date: 1937

British Expeditionary Force in Boulogne

Some of the British Expeditionary Force with their horses on the quay at Boulogne outside the main town station, their landing point in France. The fringes of cloth worn by the horses round their heads were designed to prevent irritation by flies. The Sphere reported that the British troops were feted by the Boulogne people on their arrival, and invited to take what they wanted from the shops for free. Date: August 1914

To Hell With Surrender! How Second Lieutenant J. C. Buchan

The official narrative for this drawing reads: When he saw the enemy had practically surrounded his command, he collected his platoon and prepared to fight his way back to the supporting line. At this point the enemy, who had crept round his right flank, rushed towards him, shouting out Surrender! To hell with surrender! he replied, and, shooting the foremost of the enemy, he finally repelled this advance with his platoon. He then fought his way back to the supporting line of the forward position, where he held out till dusk. At dusk he fell back as ordered, but inspite of his injuries again refused to go to the aid post, saying his place was beside his men. Date: 22nd June 1918
