During the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, it was shortly before Nelson was mortally wounded that a shot struck the fore brace bits on the quarter deck and passed between Nelson and Hardy. Both stopped and looked anxiously at each other then Nelson smiled and said, This is too warm work, Hardy, to last long.
