The Salvation Army Riots at Worthing, Sussex

These images show the Skeleton Army, opponents of the Salvation Army organised by those interested in Sunday drinking, rioting against one of the Salvation Army's religious Sunday processions. The members of the Salvation Army escaped into Montague Hall and hid there for the rest of the day. 1. Attack on Mr. G. Head's house and shop. 2. The Townhall 3. The Police Station 4. Monument in memory of Uncle Tom - Rev. Josiah Henson

Monument erected in memory of abolitionist, minister and author Rev. Josiah Henson - born into Slavery in 1789 in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden, in Kent County, Upper Canada, of British Canada. Henson's autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself (1849), is believed to have inspired the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). A number of surviving members of the Russian royal family escaped the country at the end of World War I (after the Revolution) from Yalta, Crimea (still under White Russian control) on HMS Marlborough in April 1919. Some of the ship's guests from the Russian Refugee School at Proli (?) with their Teachers. Date: 1919
