Advertisement for Elspeth Phelps, 1920s fashion

Advertisement for Elspeth Phelps of Albemarle St, London, part of a series depicting tongue in cheek scenes of society ladies (in this case the fictional Miss Lobelia Lobb). Phelps was one of the leading purveyors of fine lady's fashions in London during the First World War and 1920s. She worked with the notorious designer Reggie le Veulle. Her business later merged with the couturier Paquin. Date: 1920

Norman Hartnell & Duchess of Gloucester at Mansion House

Sir Norman Bishop Hartnell (1901-1979) British couturier and favourite fashion design of the Queen and Queen Mother, seen greeting another royal patron, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (1901-2004), whose wedding dress he designed, at a reception of fashion buyers from overseas held at the Mansion House in the City of London in 1955. The reception was given by Lady Pamela Berry (formerly Lady Pamela Smith) and was attended by London's leading designers, overseas buyers, Press representatives and the President of the Board of Trade, Mr Peter Thorneycroft and his wife. Date: 1955

Guy Laroche

Guy Laroche (1921 - 1989), French fashion designer and founder of the eponymous fashion house. Son of a cattle farming family in La Rochelle, he started as a hair stylist then worked for 10 years with Jean Desses before opening his Paris salon in the Aveue Franklin Roosevelt in 1957. Known for wearable clothes in bright, acid colours, plunging necklines and for introducing designer separates to the American market. Date: 1960
