Christmas Feasting in reign of Henry VI

The arrival of the peacock in a baronial hall in the days of Henry VI, with the customary procession ushering in the feast's centrepiece. On the left is a jester and a varlet chasing off a dog to make way for the steward. Behind the steward walk the panterer, two trumpeters, the carver, holding aloft the peacock pie ad the master cook. The fireplace, piled with Yule logs, is in the middle of the hall, as in Saxon times. Date: 24 November 1930

Bonzo a star turn again ... by George Studdy

Bonzo a star turn again in "From Dover Street to Dixie": the Studdy Curtain at the London Pavilion. He appeared in a Cochran revue, depicting a journey from England to America on a specially designed curtain, shown during the interval after the fire curtain was raised. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans Date: 6 June 1923

Florence Cook, medium, with Katie King behind her

Florence Cook (c.1856-1904) was an English medium who claimed to materialise a spirit named Katie King. This photograph, taken during a seance at the house of William Crookes, shows Cook lying with her head on the seat of a chair, in a trance, with the spirit of Katie King hovering behind her. Date: circa 1870s
