First Balkan War (1912 - 1913) - Hand-to-hand combat

Hand-to-hand combat during the First Balkan War as Greek troops overun a Turkish gun battery. The war lasted from October 1912 to May 1913, pitted the Balkan League (Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, and Bulgaria) against the Ottoman Empire. The combined armies of the Balkan states overcame the numerically inferior and strategically disadvantaged Ottoman armies, and achieved rapid success. As a result of the war, almost all remaining European territories of the Ottoman Empire were captured and partitioned among the allies, and an independent Albanian state set up. Despite their success, the Balkan states were unsatisfied with the peace settlement, and the tensions among them, with the unifying Ottoman threat gone, would soon result in the Second Balkan War

How WWI was fought

"As it is for most of us" World War I was a slog, described by many as "90% routine and 10% terror." Although soldiers lived with death every day, for the most part, major battles were few and far between, and sometimes it was the dread and anticipation of what was to come that was most psychologically damaging, especially for inexperienced new recruits. When an offensive did come, nobody could predict the ferocity or the outcome. Despite commanders hopes that attacks might take place in an orderly formation, most were a chaotic scrum of noise, smoke, screams and shell fire, as summed up by Bairnsfather's loose, vigorous penmanship. A French cantiniere 1890

French cantiniere, named as Madame Vialar, striking a distinctly sassy pose which well displays her two medals; the military medal and the Crimean medal, during the first Franco-Dahomean War. The Graphic titles this image "Madame Vialar, the last of the French cantinieres" and the accompanying article reports on uniform changes in the French army which would replace the distinguished uniform of a cantiniere with plain black dress, romanticising the relationship between the woman's uniform, ability to carry out her work and standing in the army. Date: 1890
