Queen Victorias two eldest daughters: on the right, Vicky, Princess Royal, Crown Princess, later Empress of Prussia (1840-1901) and Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse (1843-1878). This photograph, was taken in the mid-1860s, when the German countries declared war on Austria. Vickys husband, Fritz commanded one of the three Prussian armies in the field, while Alices husband Ludwig was a front line officer in the Hessian regiments.
