Caractacus before Claudius
Caractacus before Claudius. Caractacus was a British King who fought against the Roman invaders. The Romans won the battle by ambushing the Britons, capturing Caractacuss wife, daughter and brother. Caractacus sought the protection of Cartimandua, Queen of the Brigantes, but he was betrayed and she sent him, in chains, to Rome where he faced the Emperor Claudius. Whilst being led to the Emperor, Caractacus was impressed by the beauty of Rome, sentiments he passed on to Claudius along with his surprise that Claudius wanted to capture Britain, which was so poor compared to the greatest city in the world. Claudius was so flattered and taken aback at this bravery that he granted Caractacus his freedom.
