Coronation thrones, 1911

The thrones used for the enthronisation stage of the ceremony during the coronation of King George V in June 1911. This pair were reproduced by Messrs Morris (William Morris) from Jacobean originals from Knole with an X-shaped back supports of beechwood and upholstery of crimson silk damask specially designed by William Morris some years before. The silk was dyed with pure madder and woven on the Morris looms at Merton Abbey. Date: 1911
