Tatler front cover: Duchess of York and Princess Elizabeth

The Tatler front cover featuring a photograph of the Duchess of York (later Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother) with Princess Elizabeth of York (later Queen Elizabeth II) taken in July 1927, shortly after her first birthday. Although Elizabeth was not expected to inherit the throne in the 1920s, her and her family were popular subjects in the newspapers and society magazines of the day

Bugandan Royalty (card 1 of 2)

Card 1 of 2. The young King Daudi Cwa II of Uganda, seated on his elaborate golden throne (topped with a very British crown!), holding a staff of office, with his feet on a cheetah skin. Sir Daudi Cwa II, KCMG, KBE (1896 - 1939) was the King (kabaka) of Buganda from 1897 to 1939. On 14 August 1897, he succeeded Mwanga II as king of Buganda, a state in East Africa, which is now part of Uganda. A reformist, he initiated several significant changes in his kingdom, including a process of democratisation. After his death in 1939, he was succeeded by his son, Mutesa II, who went on to become the first president of Uganda. Daudi Cwa was baptized as a Protestant. "Daudi" is the Buganda language equivalent to "David"

The Coronation Chair with the Stone of Scone Featured Image

The Coronation Chair with the Stone of Scone

The Coronation Chair, Westminster Abbey, London. The stone below the seat is the infamous Stone of Scone. Historically, the artifact was kept at the now-ruined Scone Abbey in Scone, near Perth, Scotland. It was used for centuries in the coronation of the monarchs of Scotland, the monarchs of England, and, more recently, British monarchs. On 3 July 1996 it was announced in the House of Commons that the Stone would be returned to Scotland, and on 15 November 1996, after a handover ceremony at the border between representatives of the Home Office and of the Scottish Office, it was transported to Edinburgh Castle arriving on 30 November 1996 where it remains. Date: circa 1910s
