Carved staircase, Cromwell House, Highgate Hill
The carved staircase in Cromwell House, 104 Highgate Hill, North London. According to tradition, the 17th century mansion was presented by Oliver Cromwell to his eldest daughter Bridget, wife of General Ireton, circa 1630. At the time of this photograph an American relic hunter was wanting to buy the staircase and have it removed to the USA. The staircase is decorated with carved figures of soldiers of the Commonwealth period, and various designs of warfare
