Basel, Germany - The Strasbourg statue
The Strasbourg statue in Basel at the Centralbahnplatz. Created by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi in 1895, the statue was donated by the French Baron Herve de Gruyer, in appreciation of Swiss aid received during the Franco-German war, when 1, 400 women, children and old people (non-combatants) from the besieged city were evacuated to Switzerland by Swiss officials. Date: circa 1908
