Shotley Bridge General Hospital, County Durham
Aerial view of Shotley Bridge Hospital, County Durham. It was originally opened by the Gateshead Union in 1912 as a TB sanatorium (far right of picture), with accommodation for elderly and infirm workhouse inmates added later (upper half of picture). The site later became a "mental defectives colony". During World War Two, Emergency Medical Scheme wards were erected (lower part of picture)

The site was originally opened by the Metropolitan Asylums Board in 1904 for the treatment of ophthalmia in children. Its later roles included the care of long-term geriatric patients and mentally handicapped children

The administration block at Highwood (or High Wood) School, Brentwood, Essex. The school was opened by the Metropolitan Asylums Board in 1904 for the treatment of ophthalmia in children. As Highwood Hospital it later served various roles including the care of children with tuberculosis, long-term geriatric patients, and mentally handicapped children
