1937 Coronation - spectators climbing on Victoria memorial
In order to gain a better vantage point from which to see King George VI and Queen Elizabeth appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following their Coronation on 12 May 1937, some of the more daring members of the crowd climbed the Victoria Memorial and refused to come down. Eventually, a good-natured policeman scaled the statue himself and skilfully removed the tenants! Date: 1937
