Western Russian Fmily drinking Mares Milk
Family from the Baltic Region - Far Western Russia at this period - passing round a bottle of Kumis. Kumis is a fermented dairy product traditionally made from horses (mare s) milk. The drink remains important to the people of the Central Asian steppes, including the Turks, Bashkirs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Mongols, Yakuts and Uzbeks. Toward the end of the 19th century, kumis had a strong enough reputation as a cure-all to support a small industry of kumis cure resorts, mostly in southeastern Russia. This cottage industry (pictured here), is likely to be supplying such a resort with Kumis
