Toasting the tank, Christmas 1916
Secondary front cover of The War Illustrated magazine featuring an illustration of British soldiers toasting a tank, comparatively a new-comer into the arean of battle, but as the gladiator on his entrance into the Colossem was toasted and cheered by his supporters, so this extraordinary symbol of modern mechanical power may appropriately be toasted by heroes of the Somme whom it precedes " over the top" through shell-hole and barbed-wire, to victory. Tanks were first introduced into battle by the British on the 15th September 1916 when a D1 tank was guided into action by Captain H. W. Mortimore at Delville Wood. Date: 1916
