Surging crowds in Trafalgar Square, 1937 Coronation
A picture taken at the South Africa House side of Trafalgar Square shortly after daylight on the morning of the 1937 Coronation of King George VI. Shortly afterwards, barriers had to be closed to all but ticket holders. Even then several thousands gathered outside, particularly in the Strand where the road rises slightly, consoling themselves with a long distance view through periscopes and by listening to the mighty volume of cheering. Date: 1937
