Photograph by a Margate stuido photographer of three Belgian patients. They are wearing their uniform overcaots and two are wearing caps. Numbers have been written above them on the photograph. From left to right these are 2, 1, 3. On the reverse the following is written Jean Simon, 1; Cappellen Prosper, 2; Hoebanex Joseph, 3. Birchington 2 novembre 1914. These three men were patients of the Westgate VAD, who ran the hospital at Quex Park from 15 November 1914 until they moved their work to Westgate on 4 November 1914. These three men signed the Powell-Cotton Museum visitors book. Cappelen signed on 21 October 1914, Simon and Hoebanex signed on 22 October. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment (apart from the first 3-4 weeks when the Westgate detachment worked there). The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1914. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
