Tooting Bec Asylum, Surrey

A woman pushes a pram at the entrance to the Tooting Bec Asylum at Tooting Graveney, erected in 1899-1903 by the Metropolitan Asylums Board. It provided care for senile patients, infirm epileptics, and others requiring 'exceptional individual attention'. In 1924 it was renamed Tooting Bec Mental Hospital, and then later became Tooting Bec Hospital. Date: Date unknown

Entrance to Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool

The entrance to Alder Hey Hospital, near Liverpool. A road sign on the wall at the right reads Honey's Green Lane. The hospital opened in 1915 to house chronic and bedridden patients from the West Derby Union and workhouse. During the First World War, Alder Hey was used as a military hospital, later becoming a children's hospital.
