Starry Gazey Pie, Ship Inn, Mousehole, Cornwall
A mouthwatering example of a Starry Gazey Pie, served up on Tom Bawcocks Eve (23 December) at Mousehole in Cornwall. The dish, with fish heads and tails sticking out of it, is unique to Mousehole, and is prepared at the Ship Inn there. According to legend, the town had no fish because of stormy weather, so two days before Christmas a local fisherman, Tom Bawcock, went out in a storm and came back with seven different types of fish. Seen here is a man dressed up as Tom Bawcock, with a false beard, with landlord, landlady and pub customers, no doubt all looking forward to sampling the pie. Date: circa 1980s
