Somme troops keep in reserve counter attack WWI
During battles of the Somme troops which had taken part in an attack were withdrawn from the front line as soon as possible and kept in reserve for counter attacks. They usaually rested in abandoned trenches, being employed as working parties, digging defensive works or carrying supplies and ammunition to men in the front line.
