Queen Alexandra serving at London Bridge buffet, WW1
Queen Alexandra pictured serving soldiers at the free buffet organised by Lady Limerick at London Bridge station in December 1915. The Queen took her turn among the voluntary workers for an hour and a half, much to the surprise of the soldiers queuing up to be served. Free buffets were organised at major London rail stations during the First World War to provide food and refreshments to soldiers and sailors returning home on leave from the front. Note the sign at the serving counter above the Queen which states, Travelling soldiers and sailors only served. Tickets must be shown. Date: 1915
