Prince Albert onboard HMS Collingwood
Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (1895-1952), as a midshipman on HMS Collingwood, in the summer of 1914. Prince Albert was the only child of George V, other than Prince Edward, who was old enough for active service. Unlike his brother, he was not protected and in May 1916, as a sub-lieutenant on Collingwood, he took part in the Battle of Jutland. His spells at sea however, were constantly interrupted by stomach trouble adn in 1917 he required an operation for a duodenal ulcer. In 1918 he transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force
