From Palace to Tomb, Ancient Egypt Reconstruction by Matania

Episode II: From the Palace to the Tomb - The Journey Across the Nile. Second in a series of historical reconstructions by Sphere special artist, Fortunino Matania in the magazines Egypt number (inspired by the recent discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen) showing the progress of a deceased Pharaoh to the tomb. Scene depicts the mummy crossing the River Nile, representing the final detachment from earth to the spirit world. The first boat is reserved for the professional mourners and certain members of the family. The outside of the cabin is covered with embroidered drapery; the passengers keep their faces turned towards the funeral bark. The first boat tows the funeral bark - the latter built in exact imitation of the mysterious skiff used for Osiris and especially worshipped at Abydos under the name of Noshemit. It is adorned at each end with a lotus flower. The mummy, lying under a central canopy, is guarded by two priestesses. The master of ceremonies (in leopard skin) burns incense in a sacred vessel placed on a stool. The wife and children crouch around the mummy in mourning pose. Date: 1923
