The United Mine Workers (UMWA) had won a sweeping victory in an 1897 strike by the soft-coal miners in the Midwest, winning significant wage increases and growing from 10, 000 to 115, 000 members. The owners, controlled by large railroads, refused to meet with the union; the union struck in September 1900, as miners of all different nationalities walked out in support of the union. In 1900 America witnessed the biggest coal strike, with 150, 00 men protesting, The left photograph is of one of the min strike leaders, a presidents of the local union of miners at the Mount Pleasant Colliery. The middle photograph shows a ??breaker boy?, these little boys break and sort the coal into commercial sizes.
