White Star Line, RMS Olympic, with crane, on postcard (back)
White Star Line, RMS Olympic, rare original postcard by Walton of Belfast, either 1910 or 1911 - as seen here, it was posted from Northern Ireland much later, in 1939. Postcard shows a floating crane lifting the aftermost fourth funnel onto the ship. The crane was designed by Bertha Krupp (after whom the ?Big Bertha? gun of WWI was named), and made for Harland & Wolff by Benrather Maschinenfabrik in Germany. It was capable of lifting a load of 150 tons to a height of 149ft. Date: 1939
