Titanic and Olympic - Harland & Wolff, Belfast

Fascinating photograph taken on 6th March 1912, showing The RMS Titanic (left) and The RMS Olympic (right), the brand new ships of the White Star Line at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. The caption on the reverse of the print reads as follows:
"Olympic on right alongside floating crane and wharf after having floated out of dry dock - Titanic on left having floated into dry dock - All being done on one tide on 6th March 1912"
Titanic closely resembled her older sister Olympic. Although she enclosed more space and therefore had a larger gross register tonnage, the hull was the same length as Olympic's. One of the most noticeable differences from Olympic was that half of Titanic's forward promenade A-Deck (below the boat deck) was enclosed against outside weather.
1912

Four-Poster Bedroom on board Titanic

Photograph of a four poster bed in one of the first class bedrooms on the Titanic. Built by the shipyard Harland and Wolff for White Star Lines, the liner was almost identical to her sister ship, Olympic and was a rival to Cunard's Lusitania and Mauretania'. On her maiden voyage across the Atlantic, the Titanic struck an iceberg on 15th April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1503 lives. Date: 01/04/1912

Canberra: tourist class restaurant

Colour illustration depicting the tourist class restaurant on board P&O's superliner Canberra around the time of her maiden voyage to Sydney, Australia in June 1961. Designed by London architect, John Wright, the restaurant was able to seat up to 750 at one time. Screen sculptures at the entrance and in each bay are by Geoffrey Clarke. The Canberra which went out of service in 1997 was the largest ship to be built by the Harland & Wolff ship yard since White Star's Britannic in 1914
