RMS Carpathia, salvaged red octagonal floor tile
RMS Carpathia, salvaged red patterned earthenware octagonal floor tile from an unknown location on the ship, approx. 0.875 (d) x 5.875 (w) x 6 inches (diameter). Given its sturdy structure, its depth and its weight, it would appear to be from a high traffic area on board. While a kitchen area would seem possible, its pattern more likely suggests that it came from a well frequented passenger area. The Carpathia was torpedoed during WW1. The tile was recovered on 1 September 2007 by the Achilles Rover using an ROV basket. There is a remnant of a marine encrustation and some losses to the edges. Date: early 20th century
