The Proposed Gordon Camp, Gravesend
General Charles Joseph Gordon and his kings at Gravesend, England, at the proposed Gordon Camp. Gordon, also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, Gordon of Khartoum, was a celebrated war hero who died in January 1885 while defending the besieged city of Khartoum from Muslim religious leader Muhammad Ahmad. His martydom propelled him to an almost Christ-like status in Britain. He lived in Gravesend from 1865-1871, and was heavily involved with charity work alleviating poverty, including of the homeless children depicted. Date: circa 1880s
