Longwood House, St Helena
Longwood House, St Helena, the place of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte on 5th May 1821. Following exile to the Island, Napoleon moved to Longwood House in December 1815; it had fallen into disrepair, and the location was damp, windswept and unhealthy. The Times published articles insinuating that the British government was trying to hasten his death and he often complained of the living conditions in letters to the governor and his custodian, Hudson Lowe. Date: circa 1930s
