The Deserted Trench
This painting, with use of angular lines, shows a deserted, flooded trench from the Battle of the Yser, which took place in October 1914, during the First World War, between Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide. The front line was held by a Belgian force, which prevented a German advance, allowing Belgium to retain territory in a period where Germany was in overwhelming control. Date: circa 1916
