Cape Reinga lighthouse, North Island, New Zealand
View of the lighthouse at Cape Reinga, at the far northern end of the North Island, New Zealand. The lighthouse was built in 1941. In 1987 it became fully automated and the lighthouse keepers were withdrawn. According to Maori beliefs, Cape Reinga is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld by leaping off an 800 year old Kahika (or Kahikatea) tree. Date: circa 2000
